Find your Wii chipset version using the Wii's serial number by visiting this link. Wii console can have any of the following current chipsets like DMS, D2A, D2B, D2C, D2C2, D2E, D3, D3-v2, D4. This chipset version will define what modchips are compatible with your Wii.
Compare the chipset version (found in step 1) with the following table.

If step 1 is unable to guess your drive 100%:
If your wii was purchased after August 2009 and before March 2010, it most likely has D3-v2. These units require a replacement DVD circuit board to enable compatibility with older modchips to allow games to be run from DVD drive. However, these units can run game backups from a hard drive using WODE Jukebox modchip, Sundriver modchip or Softmod.
If your wii was purchased after March 2010, it is most certainly has the new D3S chipset. This chipset is not compatible with any modchip other than WODE Jukebox, Sundriver or Softmod. Again, with these user can only run game discs off hard drive UNLESS they opt for a replacement DVD-ROM to be installed, which will enable compatibility with older modchips.
After finding compatible modchip, please use the above modchip pictures (hover mouse over them) to find out about thier strengths and weaknesses. Hardware methods are more expensive than using software ones, but they ensure a hassle free experience.
